Dog Registration

Councils are required by the Dog & Cat Management Act to keep a register of dogs in the local area. All dogs aged 3 months or over must be registered withing 14 days of ownership. All dogs over 12 weeks of age must be microchipped. Dogs born after 1 July 2018 must be desexed by 6 months of age. Persons registering a dog must be 16 years of age or older.

Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) is a central database for microchipped and registered dogs and cats, regsitered breeders and registration payments.  DACO allows dog owners to login online any time and update their contact details in one place, pay annual dog registration renewals and notify councils if their dog has gone missing. All registered dogs will be issued with a lifetime registration number on a disc.

Failure to register a dog is an offence under the Act and the owner or person responsible for the dog may be fined.

Valid concession details must be provided when registering your dog.
NOTE: To qualify for a reduced registration fee for a desexed and micropchipped dog, a copy of a desexing and microchipping certificate must be provided.

Registered Breeders

Did you know there are new laws regulating the sale of dogs? If you are selling dogs, you must register as a breeder on Dogs and Cats Online (DACO). Breeders must not sell a dog unless it has been microchipped. Any advertisement you place for the sale of a dog must include your contact details and breeder registration number, this includes the sale of dogs on Facebook.

Limit on Dog Numbers

Council has a Dog By-Law which limits the number of dogs that can be kept at premises. For a premise in a township, the By-Law allows a maximum of two dogs. The maximum number of dogs that can be kept at a premise outside of a township is three dogs, with the exception of working dogs.

Dog Reporting

Council requires the assistance of the community to keep public spaces enjoyable and safe by proactively reporting dogs wandering at large, dog attacks, aggressive dogs and barking dogsReports can be made confidentially in person at the council office or by calling 8767 2033 during office hours or 0438 672 033 after hours. 

To claim an impounded dog, please contact the council office on 8767 2033 or after hours to 0438 672 033. Impounded dogs will not be released unless they are registered.
